CamStreamer is good software — but for many setups you pay for features you never use. An honest look at when the licence is worth it, when a free tool like Everstra does the same job, and when it makes sense to combine the two.
If you want to stream an Axis camera to YouTube (or any RTMP target) around the clock, you quickly run into CamStreamer — the best-known app that runs on the camera itself. It works well. The question isn't whether it's good; it's whether your use case needs its full feature set. Because that's what you're paying for.
Price first, because it usually decides. CamStreamer is sold as a one-time licence per camera. The variants relevant to home users:

What CamStreamer genuinely does well
In fairness, the strengths first — because for certain setups CamStreamer is the right call and worth every cent:
- Graphic overlays — weather, time, logos, live data burned into the image (CamOverlay).
- Multi-camera switching — a control room for up to five cameras, transitions, clips (CamSwitcher).
- Cloud services — remote access, time-lapse, cloud recording, monetisation via members-only streams.
- Commercial support — a company with a support line behind it, which matters for businesses with many installs.
If you need anything on that list — a logo on screen, switching between cameras, guaranteed support — CamStreamer is the obvious choice. Don't read on to save money that would be well spent.
The catch: most people just want one stream that stays up
In practice the most common use case looks like this: one camera, one image, going to a YouTube channel around the clock — a harbour entrance, a bird box, a construction site, a club ground. No overlays, no control room, no cloud. Just a stable, continuous stream.
For exactly that case, CamStreamer has you paying for a lot of capability that never appears on screen. And the free alternatives all come with a catch.
The free routes — and why they often fall short
OBS Studio (on a PC)
Free and powerful, but it needs a computer that stays on. For a 24/7 stream that means a PC running day and night, drawing power and able to crash. For a continuous stream it's the least practical option.
Raspberry Pi with an FFmpeg script
A popular DIY route: a Pi pulls the camera's RTSP stream and pushes it to YouTube via FFmpeg. It works — but it's additional hardware again, to set up, update and keep alive. One more device that can fail.
Cloud services (IPCamLive, webcam.io, etc.)
Convenient, but they route your stream through someone else's servers and usually charge a recurring monthly fee — exactly what many people are trying to avoid.
The pattern is always the same: either extra hardware (PC, Pi), or a recurring fee (cloud), or a high one-time licence (CamStreamer). The gap in between — on the camera, no extra hardware, no fee, no licence cost — is one almost nobody fills.

What about CamStreamer's cloud services?
In fairness: beyond the streaming app, CamStreamer offers cloud services — remote access to the camera, a health watchdog with alerts, cloud recording, time-lapse, a mobile app. These are real features, and for operators with many cameras in hard-to-reach places they can be worth the money. The difference from the rest: these are monthly subscriptions per camera, not one-time costs — from around €9.90/month (remote access) through €29.90 (recording) to €149.90/month (time-lapse), per camera. (Prices as of July 2026, without guarantee — check with the vendor.)
This is exactly where the honest question is worth asking: do you need a cloud for that — or can it be done without a recurring fee? For the two most common cloud reasons, there are free routes:
- Remote access without a public IP: cleanly solved with a free VPN directly on the camera. For Axis cameras there's a free, open-source Tailscale ACAP from the community (github.com/Mo3he/Axis_Cam_Tailscale) — not part of Everstra, but exactly the route the developer uses himself. No subscription, no third-party server in between.
- Failover (stream/heartbeat): planned as an Everstra roadmap item (see below) — the camera sends a heartbeat, and if it stops, a small self-hosted server or a Raspberry Pi at another location steps in. Self-hosted, no monthly fee.
What remains are cloud recording and the ready-made mobile app as genuine CamStreamer advantages, if you need them. But "I want to reach my camera while away" isn't in itself a compelling reason for a monthly subscription.

Custom modules — e.g. ship & flight tracker
Not off the shelf, but built to the requirements of each installation. That it works isn't a claim: the Schlüttsiel ferry-port webcam already runs such a module — an overlay with ship tracking and official weather warnings in the live image. If you need something comparable, get in touch.
Overlay module
Graphics, data and logos in the image — as a dedicated module built into Everstra. In progress, coming next. Until then, an overlay can run alongside via CamOverlay without any trouble (see above).
Capture / time-lapse module
Recording and time-lapse straight from the camera. Planned for a later step.
Heartbeat failover (part of the Live module)
The camera sends a heartbeat; if it stops, a self-hosted server or a Raspberry Pi at another location steps in. Scripts for the server and Pi are planned to become part of the Live module — failover without a cloud subscription.

Free — and honest about what that means
Everstra is a one-person project by an independent developer, not a company. It started from a simple wish: a lean, free tool that does exactly one job well, for my own setups. Offered free of charge. Being honest also means being clear about the limits:
- No SLA, no guaranteed support. There is no service-level agreement and no entitlement to support, maintenance, or updates. Any help given is voluntary and best-effort. For a business that needs a contract and a support line, that is exactly what CamStreamer offers — and a fair reason to choose it.
- Licences are free, but hardware-bound and not a right. A licence key is issued free of charge and tied to the individual camera hardware, valid for the lifetime of that camera. If the camera fails or is replaced, there is no claim to a new free key — a fresh request would be needed, and issuing keys is at the developer's discretion.
- If Everstra ever needs a fee, it protects the camera you already run. Should the project grow unexpectedly and upkeep require it, a modest licence fee may apply to future versions — never retroactively. The terms in effect when you activated a version stay valid for that version and that camera. (See the EULA for the binding wording.)
In short: it's free, it's honest, and it's run by one person who uses it himself. That's the deal — no more, no less.

Choose Everstra if you have a single camera and just want a stable 24/7 stream, with no extra hardware, no fee, no licence cost. For that — very common — case, Everstra does the same job as CamStreamer, for free.

- Cloud-Dienste – Fernzugriff, Zeitraffer, Cloud-Aufnahmen, Monetarisierung über Mitglieder-Streams.
- Kommerzieller Support – ein Unternehmen mit Hotline im Rücken, wichtig für Firmen mit vielen Installationen.
Wenn du irgendetwas aus dieser Liste brauchst – ein Logo im Bild, Umschaltung zwischen Kameras, garantierten Support – dann ist CamStreamer die naheliegende Lösung. Lies hier nicht weiter, um Geld zu sparen, das gut angelegt wäre.
Der Haken: Die meisten wollen nur einen Stream, der läuft

Ein beliebter Bastelweg: Ein Pi zieht den RTSP-Stream der Kamera und schiebt ihn per FFmpeg an YouTube. Funktioniert – aber es ist wieder zusätzliche Hardware, die eingerichtet, aktualisiert und am Laufen gehalten werden muss. Ein Gerät mehr, das ausfallen kann.
Cloud-Dienste (IPCamLive, webcam.io u. a.)
Bequem, aber sie leiten deinen Stream über fremde Server und kosten in der Regel eine laufende monatliche Gebühr – genau das, was viele vermeiden wollen.
Das Muster ist immer dasselbe: Entweder Zusatzhardware (PC, Pi), oder eine laufende Gebühr (Cloud), oder eine hohe Einmallizenz (CamStreamer). Die Lücke dazwischen – auf der Kamera, ohne Zusatzhardware, ohne Gebühr, ohne Lizenzkosten – füllt bisher fast niemand.

Nicht von der Stange, sondern individuell nach den Anforderungen der jeweiligen Installation gebaut. Dass es funktioniert, ist keine Behauptung: An der Schlüttsiel-Fährhafen-Webcam läuft bereits ein solches Modul – ein Overlay mit Schiffs-Tracking und amtlichen Wetterwarnungen im Live-Bild. Ausfallsicherung per Heartbeat (Teil des Live-Moduls)
Die Kamera sendet einen Heartbeat; bleibt er aus, springt ein selbst gehosteter Server oder ein Raspberry Pi an einem anderen Standort ein. Skripte für Server und Pi sollen Teil des Live-Moduls werden – Ausfallsicherung ohne Cloud-Abo.
„In Entwicklung“ und „Geplant“ heißt: noch nicht verfügbar. Diese Übersicht zeigt die Richtung, keine Zusagen zu festen Terminen.
Kostenlos – und ehrlich dazu, was das heißt
Everstra ist das Projekt einer Einzelperson, kein Unternehmen. Entstanden aus einem einfachen Wunsch: ein schlankes, kostenloses Werkzeug, das genau eine Sache gut macht – für meinen eigenen Bedarf. Kostenlos angeboten. Ehrlich sein heißt auch, die Grenzen klar zu benennen:
- Kein SLA, kein garantierter Support. Es gibt keine Service-Level-Zusage und keinen Anspruch auf Support, Wartung oder Updates. Jede Hilfe ist freiwillig und nach Möglichkeit. Wer als Firma einen Vertrag und eine Hotline braucht, bekommt genau das bei CamStreamer – ein fairer Grund, sich dafür zu entscheiden.
- Lizenzen sind kostenlos, aber an die Kamera gebunden und kein Rechtsanspruch. Ein Lizenzschlüssel wird kostenlos ausgegeben und ist an die einzelne Kamera-Hardware gebunden, gültig für die Lebensdauer dieser Kamera. Stirbt die Kamera oder wird sie ersetzt, besteht kein Anspruch auf einen neuen kostenlosen Schlüssel – es wäre eine erneute Anfrage nötig, und die Ausgabe liegt im Ermessen des Entwicklers.
- Falls Everstra je etwas kostet, schützt das die Kamera, die du schon betreibst. Sollte das Projekt unerwartet wachsen und der Aufwand es nötig machen, kann für künftige Versionen ein moderater Lizenzpreis gelten – nie rückwirkend. Die Bedingungen, die bei der Aktivierung einer Version galten, bleiben für diese Version und diese Kamera gültig. (Verbindlicher Wortlaut in der EULA.)
