Free streaming, overlays, recording and timelapse for Axis cameras — running directly on the camera hardware. No PC, no cloud, no monthly fee. Here's the idea, and what each module does.
An Axis camera already has a capable processor inside it. Everstra puts the software there, on the camera itself, instead of around it. That's the whole idea: nothing extra to power, nothing to maintain alongside, and nothing to pay per month. You install a module as an ACAP app, request a free licence key, and it runs — as long as the camera runs.
On the camera, not around it. No computer that has to stay on, no second device to keep alive, no third-party server your video passes through, and no subscription. Everything happens inside the camera you already own.

The modules in detail
Everstra Live — streaming
Forwards the camera stream, stably and continuously, to YouTube, Facebook or any RTMP/RTMPS target. Free, runs on the camera. Supports encrypted streaming (RTMPS) — required by Facebook Live, recommended by YouTube, and it works on networks that block the usual RTMP port.
Since version 0.3.0 it also runs up to three independent streams in parallel, each with its own destination, resolution, audio source — and its own view area. Axis cameras let you define view areas freely (cropped regions of the sensor), so a single camera can serve three completely different framings at once: a wide shot to YouTube, a tight crop to your own server, a third framing somewhere else. Keep-alive failover (part of the Live module)
Since version 0.4.0 the camera writes a heartbeat; if it stops, a standby client — downloaded from the app as a ZIP and run on a Raspberry Pi or small server at another location — takes over with a still maintenance image, so YouTube never ends the broadcast. That keeps the stream's URL, audience and accumulated engagement instead of restarting from zero after a long outage. E-mail notifications on takeover and hand-back — the client reports the camera's last-seen time and the failover start, the camera reports the failover duration on its return. Self-hosted, no cloud subscription; main stream only, still image, not live video. Setting up the client needs basic Linux knowledge — not plug-and-play.
Everstra Overlay — text & graphic overlays
Text, graphic and weather overlays rendered directly on the video stream by the Skia engine. Up to 5 text, 5 graphic and 2 weather overlays, time variables, custom fonts, a media manager, and a weekly/hourly scheduler with sunrise/sunset automation. Custom modules — e.g. ship & flight tracker
Not off the shelf, but built to the requirements of each installation. That it works isn't a claim: the Schlüttsiel ferry-port webcam already runs such a module — an overlay with ship tracking and official weather warnings in the live image. If you need something comparable, get in touch.
Remote access & failover — without a subscription
Two things people often reach for a paid cloud tier to get can be solved without a recurring fee:
- Remote access without a public IP: cleanly solved with a free VPN directly on the camera. For Axis cameras there's a free, open-source Tailscale ACAP from the community (github.com/Mo3he/Axis_Cam_Tailscale) — not part of Everstra, but exactly the route the developer uses himself. No subscription, no third-party server in between.
- Failover (stream/heartbeat): available since Everstra Live 0.4.0 (see above) — the camera sends a heartbeat, and if it stops, a small self-hosted server or a Raspberry Pi at another location takes over with a still maintenance image, keeping the session alive. Self-hosted, no monthly fee.
Free — and honest about what that means
Everstra is a one-person project by an independent developer, not a company. It started from a simple wish: a lean, free tool that does exactly one job well, for my own setups. Offered free of charge. Being honest also means being clear about the limits:
- No SLA, no guaranteed support. There is no service-level agreement and no entitlement to support, maintenance, or updates. Any help given is voluntary and best-effort. A business that needs a contract and a guaranteed support line is better served by a commercial product — a fair reason to look elsewhere.
- Licences are free, but hardware-bound and not a right. A licence key is issued free of charge and tied to the individual camera hardware, valid for the lifetime of that camera. If the camera fails or is replaced, there is no claim to a new free key — a fresh request would be needed, and issuing keys is at the developer's discretion.
- If Everstra ever needs a fee, it protects the camera you already run. Should the project grow unexpectedly and upkeep require it, a modest licence fee may apply to future versions — never retroactively. The terms in effect when you activated a version stay valid for that version and that camera. (See the EULA for the binding wording.)
In short: it's free, it's honest, and it's run by one person who uses it himself. That's the deal — no more, no less.

No. Everstra runs entirely on the camera and has no recurring fee. Licences are free and tied to the individual camera hardware. There is no cloud service in between and nothing to pay per month.

Du installierst ein Modul als ACAP-App, forderst einen kostenlosen Lizenzschlüssel an, und es läuft — solange die Kamera läuft.
Auf der Kamera, nicht drumherum. Kein Computer, der anbleiben muss, kein zweites Gerät am Leben zu halten, kein fremder Server, durch den dein Video läuft, und kein Abo. Alles passiert in der Kamera, die du ohnehin schon hast.

Everstra Live – Streaming
Reicht den Kamerastream stabil und dauerhaft an YouTube, Facebook oder ein beliebiges RTMP-/RTMPS-Ziel weiter. Kostenlos, läuft auf der Kamera. Unterstützt verschlüsseltes Streaming (RTMPS) — bei Facebook Live Pflicht, bei YouTube empfohlen, und es funktioniert auch in Netzen, die den üblichen RTMP-Port sperren.
Seit Version 0.3.0 laufen auch bis zu drei unabhängige Streams parallel — jeder mit eigenem Ziel, eigener Auflösung, eigener Audioquelle und eigenem Bildausschnitt. Axis-Kameras erlauben frei definierbare Sichtbereiche (zugeschnittene Teilbereiche des Sensors), sodass eine einzelne Kamera drei völlig verschiedene Bildausschnitte gleichzeitig liefern kann: die Totale zu YouTube, ein enger Ausschnitt auf den eigenen Server, ein dritter woandershin. Keep-Alive-Ausfallsicherung (Teil des Live-Moduls)
Seit Version 0.4.0 schreibt die Kamera einen Heartbeat; bleibt er aus, übernimmt ein Standby-Client – als ZIP aus der App geladen und auf einem Raspberry Pi oder kleinen Server an einem anderen Standort betrieben – mit einem Wartungsbild, sodass YouTube den Stream nie beendet. So bleiben URL, Publikum und die gesammelte Reichweite erhalten, statt nach einem langen Ausfall bei null neu zu starten. E-Mail-Benachrichtigung bei Übernahme und Rückgabe – der Client meldet den letzten Kamerakontakt und den Failover-Start, die Kamera meldet bei ihrer Rückkehr die Failover-Dauer. Selbst gehostet, ohne Cloud-Abo; nur Hauptstream, Standbild, kein Live-Video. Die Einrichtung des Clients setzt Linux-Grundwissen voraus – kein Plug-and-play.

Individuelle Module – z. B. Schiffs- & Flug-Tracker
Nicht von der Stange, sondern individuell nach den Anforderungen der jeweiligen Installation gebaut. Dass es funktioniert, ist keine Behauptung: An der Schlüttsiel-Fährhafen-Webcam läuft bereits ein solches Modul – ein Overlay mit Schiffs-Tracking und amtlichen Wetterwarnungen im Live-Bild. Wenn du etwas Vergleichbares brauchst, sprich mich an.
Fernzugriff & Ausfallsicherung – ohne Abo
Zwei Dinge, für die man oft zu einem kostenpflichtigen Cloud-Tarif greift, lassen sich ohne laufende Gebühr lösen:
- Fernzugriff ohne öffentliche IP: löst sich sauber mit einem kostenlosen VPN direkt auf der Kamera. Für Axis-Kameras gibt es dafür einen freien, quelloffenen Tailscale-ACAP von der Community (github.com/Mo3he/Axis_Cam_Tailscale) – nicht Teil von Everstra, aber genau der Weg, den der Entwickler selbst nutzt. Kein Abo, kein fremder Server dazwischen.
- Ausfallsicherung (Stream/Heartbeat): seit Everstra Live 0.4.0 verfügbar (siehe oben) – die Kamera sendet einen Heartbeat, und fällt er aus, übernimmt ein eigener kleiner Server oder ein Raspberry Pi an einem anderen Standort mit einem Wartungsbild und hält den Stream am Leben. Selbst gehostet, ohne Monatsgebühr.
Kostenlos – und ehrlich dazu, was das heißt
Everstra ist das Projekt einer Einzelperson, kein Unternehmen. Entstanden aus einem einfachen Wunsch: ein schlankes, kostenloses Werkzeug, das genau eine Sache gut macht – für meinen eigenen Bedarf. Kostenlos angeboten. Ehrlich sein heißt auch, die Grenzen klar zu benennen:
- Kein SLA, kein garantierter Support. Es gibt keine Service-Level-Zusage und keinen Anspruch auf Support, Wartung oder Updates. Jede Hilfe ist freiwillig und nach Möglichkeit. Wer als Firma einen Vertrag und eine garantierte Hotline braucht, ist mit einem kommerziellen Produkt besser bedient – ein fairer Grund, sich anderswo umzusehen.
- Lizenzen sind kostenlos, aber an die Kamera gebunden und kein Rechtsanspruch. Ein Lizenzschlüssel wird kostenlos ausgegeben und ist an die einzelne Kamera-Hardware gebunden, gültig für die Lebensdauer dieser Kamera. Stirbt die Kamera oder wird sie ersetzt, besteht kein Anspruch auf einen neuen kostenlosen Schlüssel – es wäre eine erneute Anfrage nötig, und die Ausgabe liegt im Ermessen des Entwicklers.
- Falls Everstra je etwas kostet, schützt das die Kamera, die du schon betreibst. Sollte das Projekt unerwartet wachsen und der Aufwand es nötig machen, kann für künftige Versionen ein moderater Lizenzpreis gelten – nie rückwirkend. Die Bedingungen, die bei der Aktivierung einer Version galten, bleiben für diese Version und diese Kamera gültig. (Verbindlicher Wortlaut in der EULA.)
Kurz: kostenlos, ehrlich, und von einer Person betrieben, die es selbst nutzt. Das ist der Deal – nicht mehr, nicht weniger.

Everstra füllt genau eine Lücke: stabiles Streaming, Overlays auf der Kamera und automatisierte Aufnahme – Langzeitaufnahme, Startrails, Zeitraffer und rollierende Intraday-Clips – ohne Zusatzhardware, ohne Gebühr, ohne Abo, direkt auf der Kamera.
Es ersetzt keine vollwertige Regie und keine gemanagte Cloud-Plattform mit SLA. Aber für den häufigen Fall, dass eine Kamera rund um die Uhr ihre Aufgabe erledigt, ist der Weg auf der Kamera schwer zu schlagen: nichts weiter zu betreiben, zu warten oder zu bezahlen.
